Lego Levees

The title is a quote from Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke.

I decided to tackle this subject matter after watching the film and planning to visit New Orleans (I missed the bus to Lousiana ). I happened to have a Mardi Gras mask that I used in a performance piece about this subject matter a few years ago. After wear and tear caused by neglect and natural causes the mask became an interesting object for me because Mardi Gras is a broad term that revolves around the people of New Orleans.

I felt like a torn mask was a perfect way to represent how the people were looked down upon and how their lives were torn apart.

It's already been four years since this event shook us all but the terror still dwells on. With 1,836 confirmed deaths and 705 people still missing, the journey towards a fully reconstructed, New Orleans, physically and mentally, seems like a distant dream...
